Welcome to my Walk for Kids fundraising page! I hope that you will join me in raising money for camp programs for children with cancer and their families.
When my older brother, Billy, was six years old, he was diagnosed with Leukemia. He went through treatment and chemotherapy for 3 years before going into cardiac arrest in 2007 as an effect of prolonged chemotherapy. He suffered from a severe anoxic brain injury that left him in a permanent minimally conscious state with no physical function and little to no cognitive function. My family began attending camp in 2005, and I continued to do so until my high school graduation in 2019. Camp helped raise me, and it was my sanctuary. Through all of the pain surrounding my brother’s injuries, camp gave me the best community of mentors and peers, and I wish every single childhood cancer patient and sibling could have the same opportunity.
For more than thirty five years, Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times has provided cost free camp programs for children with cancer and their families. It is camp’s philosophy that love, care, attention, and above all else, friendship transforms lives and leads to healthy outcomes. Camp provides families with the unique opportunity to pause, smile, connect with others who are facing the same challenges, and renew a sense of hope. At the same time, children develop critical social/emotional skills that are often underdeveloped in patients and siblings who miss out on peer to peer interactions during years of treatment in their formative years.
We know we can’t negate the impact of chemotherapy or reduce the pain that comes with treatment, but cancer should not take away the opportunity for a child to experience the fun, laughter and joy of life. Camp provides that opportunity and more! Offering children fighting cancer the chance to take a break from hospitals and find the opportunity to just be “kids”.
