Welcome to my personal Walk for Kids page!
I discovered Camp 22 years ago as I sat cross-legged at the foot of my mom’s desk, sifting through medical files filled with jargon I could hardly wrap my head around. I was looking for an explanation as to why my sister Katee had died. My parents were hurting, my brother, too, yet there was no information in those files that would tell me why she had died and not me. At 13 I had never faced a world without Katee, and suddenly I was grasping for anything to make me feel closer to my identical twin. We had shared every facet of our life together, including cancer, and I needed to know what the next step was.
Amongst the medical files I found a brochure for Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times, which is a program of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern California. The services provided by the LA House during Katee’s battle with cancer were paramount in keeping our family grounded and together. The fact that Camp was a program of the charity, and worked directly with kids and cancer, had me sold! It was at that moment I made my first tangible goal: I was going to volunteer there one day.
This upcoming summer will be my 15th at Good Times. I'm lucky to be working full-time for the organization and live in the mountains of Idyllwild. My commitment to Camp has allowed me to spend every day honoring the life and death of my twin and I am forever grateful Good Times was in the shuffled pile on the floor that day, all those years ago.
We know we can’t negate the impact of chemotherapy, or reduce the pain that comes with medical treatment. But we know that cancer should not take away the opportunity for a child to experience fun, laughter and the joy of being alive. At Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times, kids are just... kids!
