Welcome to my personal Walk for Kids page! I hope that you will join me in raising money for camp programs for children with cancer and their families.
My oldest sister was diagnosed with neuroblastoma a very aggressive and deadly form of childhood cancer when she was 14 months old. The cancer had many setbacks for my sister with the doctors saying there was only hope she would walk again. My parents were determined to get my sister back to “normal” with that came treatments, checkup’s, and physical, occupational and speech therapies. Hospital and doctor offices became my new normal it didn’t only rob my sister of her childhood but all of my sibling and myself. Leaving the house and hanging out with friends was the biggest no, it held the fear of getting sick and bringing it home to her. It was hard growing up having others not able to understand my life. When I came of age to go to camp I was scared leaving my routine of life, my siblings told me it will be fun and don’t worry. Summers after summers of going my love for this place turned into my home away from home. 10 summers and a few winters I spent here everyone understood, nobody was labeled, everyone was normal, and it was the support my family needed all long to get through it. It helps kids get through their treatments and have a summer away from hospitals and are able to receive their treatments “up the mountain” at camp. Until there is a cure there is Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times. As a cost free camp for cancer paitents and their siblining I need your help to continue it to be cost free. Any amount will be extremly helpful if 10 people donated $10 thats $100 which will cover the cost for a campers meal for the week.
For more than thirty years, Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times has provided cost free camp programs for children with cancer and their families. It is our philosophy that love, care, attention, and above all else, friendship transforms lives and leads to healthy outcomes. Camp provides families with the unique opportunity to pause, smile, connect with others who are facing the same challenges, and renew a sense of hope. At the same time, children develop critical social/emotional skills that are often underdeveloped in patients and siblings who miss out on peer to peer interactions during years of treatment in their formative years.
We know we can’t negate the impact of chemotherapy or reduce the pain that comes with treatment, but we feel that cancer should not take away the opportunity for a child to experience the fun, laughter and joy of life. Camp provides that opportunity and more! Offering children fighting cancer the chance to take a break from hospitals and find the opportunity to just be ”kids”.
