Our First Time at Camp! --- DJ 8; Isabelle 11
Our First Time at Camp! --- DJ 8; Isabelle 11

Welcome to my personal Walk for Kids page! I hope that you will join me in raising money for camp programs for children with cancer and their families.

Every year, I talk about how Camp has been a part of my family for over a decade!  When Isabelle and DJ were just young children (Isabelle is now 25 and DJ is 23!), we travelled 'up the mountain' and our lives were changed forever.  Over the years, we painted, planted and hammered our way into the Camp family.  When Isabelle was old enough, she became a Camp counselor, and DJ became Camp's handyman. When DJ was in high school, he was the runner up in the Heroes for Healing fundraising event.  It was a really proud moment for our family!

This year, our Camp family, and my own family, suffered a loss that is hard to describe.  Just a couple of weeks ago, Camp lost Brian Crater, our Camp Director since 1988.  Brian was the heart and soul of Camp.  And, he was like family to my family.  During hard times, it was easy to turn to Brian, with his warm embrace and a smile that could wipe away any tear.  In remembering Brian, Camp put it so aptly when they talked about who Brian was 'when no one was looking.'  Brian wasn't Camp's ultimate caretaker because it brought him fame or fortune; he did it for the love of children and his belief that, "The purpose of human life is to serve, to show compassion and the will to help others."

This year, I walk for Brian and his beautiful family.

For forty years, Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times has provided cost free camp programs for children with cancer and their families. It is our philosophy that love, care, attention, and above all else, friendship transforms lives and leads to healthy outcomes. Camp provides families with the unique opportunity to pause, smile, connect with others who are facing the same challenges, and renew a sense of hope.

We know we can’t negate the impact of chemotherapy or reduce the pain that comes with treatment, but we feel that cancer should not take away the opportunity for a child to experience the fun, laughter and joy of life. Camp provides that opportunity and more!
