Welcome to my personal Walk for Kids page!
I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in October 2008. After treatments, (and now that I was a card carrying cancer patient), I attended a cost free summer camp for young adults with cancer called Camp Mak-A-Dream. At Camp Mak-A-Dream I had the opportunity to meet people from all over the country who had been through the same experiences as me. I also learned to conquer my fear of heights and how to not be afraid of looking silly and just have fun. Camp Mak-A-Dream was a life changing experience that opened my eyes to a new world of community and acceptance. I felt so lucky that I was able to attend Camp Mak-A-Dream, that I wanted to give back in a similar way. After some encouragement from my oncology team, I decided to apply to be a counselor at Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times (CRMFGT) and it was the best decision I have EVER made!
I started my journey at CRMFGT in 2011 and have been a counselor there ever since. Being a counselor at CRMFGT has changed my life completely and helped me grow in ways I could have never imagined. It has given me confidence, independence, and leadership skills. Many people call CRMFGT “home”, and it is for many counselors like me, but more importantly CRMFGT is for children with cancer and their siblings. CRMFGT is medically supervised which allows campers to be safe and also have the summer of their lives. Here is a list of some of the activities the campers have experienced in the past:
Learning to care for and ride a horse
Ascend the 50 foot climbing tower
Stand on stage in front of 100+ people and sing a song that you made up with your friends
Practice cannonballs in the pool
Learn to make pretzels from scratch
Beat your counselors in archery and make them dress up silly for meal times
End breakfast with a 3-4 song dance party
Build a car out of popsicle sticks and compete against other cabins to see if it can safely transport an egg down a ramp
Watch popsicle stick cars crash furiously while leaving egg innards splashed all over the floor
Because of COVID, this is the second year that summer camp will be completely online. Campers will not be able to do all of the things from the list above but they will have the opportunity to have their very own "Camp in a box". This box includes activities, supplies, and camp swag so that they can participate in our virtual summer camp. Your donation will help us send out "camp in the box" to all of our amazing campers.
I hope that you will join me in raising money for all these WONDERFUL AND DESERVING children and their families. Be sure to check back to view my progress, and please share this page so that I can reach my fundraising goal!
