We Walk For Kids Like Milo...

After a lengthy process of fertility treatments, Lucia and Alex Maricich were overjoyed when they received the news last summer that they were expecting their first child.  In October, after a healthy and routine first trimester of pregnancy, Lucia and Alex decided to fly from their home in Maryland, to celebrate their first wedding anniversary with Alex’s parents in Redondo Beach.  However, after a week’s relaxing vacation, life changed in an instant for the Maricich Family.

At five months into her pregnancy, Lucia developed a placental abruption which saw her being rushed to the Emergency Room and admitted into Little Company of Mary Medical Center in Torrance where she was placed on bed rest for the next week.  Lucia was then transferred to Long Beach Memorial Medical Center for more specialized high-risk prenatal care.  Six days later, at a gestational age of only 23 weeks and 6 days, little Milo entered the world weighing a tiny 1lb 4.4oz, and measuring just 11½ inches.

Two days later, Lucia was ready to be discharged.  Knowing that the family was far from home and Milo faced an extensive hospital stay, a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit social worker told Lucia and Alex about the Long Beach Ronald McDonald House.

“It is amazing,” says Alex.  “My Dad’s house is too far away.  We don’t have a car - we had come here on vacation.  With the House, we are able to walk back and forth to the hospital whenever we need, even when we get a phone call in the middle of the night.  We would never be able to do that if we were anywhere else.”

After more than two months of calling our House their home, Lucia and Alex still ride a daily rollercoaster of emotions as Milo’s growth and development continues.

“We take two steps forward and one step back.  We have faced a lot of struggles and have no clue how we would have done this if the House wasn’t here,” Lucia says.

Now at a gestational age of 32 weeks, and weighing 2lbs 11oz, Milo is showing everyone his fighting spirit.  And, because of supporters like you, Lucia and Alex have been able to be by Milo’s side every step of the way.

We hope you will join us in continuing to keep families close to their sick child as we “Walk for Kids” on Sunday, April 22, 2018.  To register your team and for more information, please visit www.walkforkids.org/longbeach.  Thank you for helping us help kids.
