Our Walk for Kids is just a month away ... and I need your help!
Dear friends and family ..
Our Walk for Kids is coming up quickly on Sunday, April 23th. I hope you’ll consider joining me in raising funds for seriously ill children and their families. Here is just one reason why I need your help ...
Fathers Ivano and Stefano, along with daughter Aida were ecstatic when they heard their surrogate in Southern California was expecting twin girls. The pregnancy had appeared to be progressing normally and in just a few months the twins would soon be in Ivano and Stefano’s arms. However, “soon” came a little faster than expected.
The excitement came to a halt when their surrogate went into premature labor at 27 weeks and experienced a number of complications. After hearing this news Stefano, Ivano, along with Aida and Stefano’s mother Ambretta, made immediate travel arrangements from their hometown in Perugia, Italy to Long Beach, CA so that they could be with their fragile newborn babies. Sadly, at two days old, one of the twins passed away before the family was able to arrive from Italy.
After a long journey to California, the family was finally able to meet their new baby, Ambra. Although this was a joyous moment for the family, Ivano and Stefano were still mourning the loss of one of their daughters and were worried about the health of Ambra.
Through this devastating time the family was seeking comfort and care, and worried about where they were going to stay. Their social worker at Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach suggested the family stay at the Long Beach Ronald McDonald House. Soon enough they found themselves steps away from 1 week old Ambra without having to worry about where to lay their head at night to rest. The family quickly settled in when Aida became best friends with Peter, another child staying at the House. Aida enjoyed visits from a therapy dog, played around the House and even started to learn English! She also celebrated her 2nd birthday with balloons and cake. Ivano and Stefano quickly found the support of the staff and other families invaluable.
“Thank you for welcoming us when we were tired and saddened Thank you for having supported us when we were lost and discouraged. Thank you for sharing our joys. Thank you for having recognized our whole family when we were together. Forever grateful, Stefano, Ivano, Ambretta, Aida, and Ambra.”
87 nights at LBRMH had passed and Ambra’s road to recovery went smoothly. From being intubated to breathing on her own, she had made incredible progress considering how premature she was. The family flew back to Italy on June 25th and are happy and at home with baby Ambra. The time that Ivano, Stefano, Aida and Ambretta had spent at the House has helped provide a place to stay while the family was miles away from their home country.
When you participate in our Walk for Kids, you are showing your support for families who are facing the fear and uncertainty of having a seriously ill child.
