Welcome to my personal Walk for Kids page!
Nearly twenty years ago I sat crossed legged on the floor, at the foot of my Mom’s desk. I sat there for what felt like hours, sifting through medical files, with jargon I could hardly wrap my head around. I was looking for an explanation as to why my sister had died.
My parents were hurting, my brother too. However, there was no piece of information in those files that could explain why she died and not me. I wasn't going to discover some missed course of treatment that would change my reality. I was 13, and I had never faced the world alone. Everything I ever did was in toe with my twin and vice versa. I needed to know what was next for me, and I was desperate to find answers. Amongst medical files I found marketing materials for Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times, a program of the Ronald McDonald House Charities. The services provided by the LA House during Katee’s battle with cancer were paramount to keeping our family together and grounded. The fact that Camp was a program of the charity, had me sold. It was at that moment I made my first real and very personal goal, I was going to be a volunteer one day. Today after twelve years as a volunteer, and nearly twenty since I sat cross legged on the floor, I am the proud & fiercely dedicated year around Program Associate for Camp. That decision has shaped every facet of my adult life. I’m grateful for the opportunity to honor my sister every day of my life.
We know we can’t negate the impact of chemotherapy or reduce the pain that comes with treatment, but we feel that cancer should not take away the opportunity for a child to experience the fun, laughter and joy of life. Camp provides that opportunity and more! Any gift, big or small, directly impact children and families with cancer. Because of the financial burden of a cancer diagnosis, Camp is cost-free to our kiddos and families.
Consider supporting me, but more importantly these deserving kiddos. Everyday I see lives changes for the better be because of Camp!
