Emily Camp's Page for the Walk for Kids 2017
Every year about this time, I ask you to help ensure that kids with cancer and their families share a life-altering experience at Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times. Each year I try to make it clear what's special and what's new.
This year I brought a new program of Mindfulness through Nature to Camp, a combination of meditation, nature observation and art, which was very well received by counselors and kids alike as a way to focus their attention on living in the present, loving themselves as much as others, and reaching out to the people around them. In our effort to build increased self confidence, independent living and coping skills, and a renewed sense of a supportive community, it was a success.
At family camp, the all volunteer staff worked to provide fun and meaningful ways for the whole family to play and heal together, leaving behind the worries and shambles of their daily lives that cancer so profoundly affects. Families left the weekend with a renewed sense of hope, new friends with whom to share their worries and information, and in many cases, new detailed new strategies of coping not only with their child’s medical needs, but also of building and maintaining a strong family. With our family camp reunion, for campers who are too old to use our traditional program, we identified ongoing needs within the family to resolve medical and psychological issues that persist long after treatment--learning disabilities, social deficits, unresolved trauma and broken family dynamics.
Last year none of this would have been possible without your help. As we move forward to enhance our programs, such as a year-round teen program, a young adult survivor support group, and the development of an active alumni association of the 36,000 campers we have served over the years, I reach out once again to ask that you donate to Camp, a place where "healing happens" for everyone--campers, parents, counselors--and me! I truly appreciate that you continue to make this important work possible.
With love and deep gratitude, Emily
