"As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands...
One for helping yourself, the other for helping others." - Sam Levenson
During one of my idol Audrey Hepburn's speeches as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF, she recited her favorite poem "Time Tested Beauty Tips" by Sam Levenson. Also a favorite of mine, because as our society becomes increasingly obsessed with beauty, it remains a timeless reminder of the things beauty should truly be measured by: speaking words of kindness, seeking out the good in people, sharing your food with the hungry, etc. And, to me, there will never be anything more beautiful than one person helping another.
For almost a decade, I have worked with a wonderful organization called The Art of Elysium. Because of that, I have personally been able to share art therapy with a variety of patients and their families over the years. The one thing that always shocks me is how grateful the parents are for the 15-20 minutes I spend doing a simple art project with their child. I believe their appreciation stems from being provided with an unexpected distraction, relieving them of their current circumstances for that brief moment.
The beautiful thing about the Ronald McDonald House Charities is that they provide this relief for an even longer period of time. Having a place that feels like home to retreat to while your child is seeking medical treatment is such a huge blessing. Not everyone has a strong support system to help when these situations arise or the luxury of affording a hotel, and the last thing a parent wants to do is be away from their child during such uncertain times. There are already so many burdens that go along with hospital stays, so to relieve them of anything possible makes this a cause I am more than happy to contribute to and I hope you will too! I have experienced first-hand what the littlest kindness can mean to these families and how genuinely thankful they are, so I can guarantee your generosity will be immensely appreciated.
For more than 40 years, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern California has been dedicated to creating a community where children and their families embrace life and healing with a sense of hope, enthusiasm, courage and joy through the operation of Ronald McDonald Houses, Ronald McDonald Family Rooms, Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times, a Community Grant Board and four scholarship programs. When you participate in the Walk for Kids, you are showing your support for families who are facing the fear and uncertainty of having a seriously ill child.
